Conflict of the Story

My cousins used to approach me whenever they have assignments especially during the time that i was not too busy with my work. Well, i usually got those basic academic home works like formal writing compositions, Mathematics, Science and History. Don’t get me wrong but I am not that Nerdy guy who knows everything but I do love my academic subjects when i was in High School. Actually, i am very thankful that we have Internet at home because i can always search for answers if i don’t know the topic at all. I am really grateful because I am learning from their assignments too. I was asking myself if missed this topic, am i present when my teacher is discussing about this or maybe i wasn’t really paying attention to it at all. I remember one of my cousins asked me to make a book report for her. PhotobucketThere’s actually a format for it and aside from providing the summary, i have to write down the characters, the settings, the moral lessons, the climax and even the conflict of the story. Are you guys familiar with this so called Conflict of the story? I don’t have any idea of it at first , not until searching the web thoroughly. Conflict is actually an absolute necessity in any form of storytelling. It posits the challenges and obstacles which the principal characters must confront, and details the means by which they overcome them. Without it, there will be no Story. It’s more like putting a different tempo or tunes in a song and without it, you’ll sound auto-tuned or lifeless. It makes the story more interesting and more alive. There are Four Main categories of Conflict.

Man Vs Man. As what the term connotes, it is where a certain character is opposing another character. Protagonist vs Antagonist. This is the simplest form of conflict and is very common to all stories whether they are opposing to each other by means of a physical combat or their opinions and ideas are both contrasting to each other.

Man Vs Nature. Think of the Titanic or 2012 film? These are the best examples of Man Vs Nature because they are both opposing against nature or even God. Everything that has to deal with the challenges against the natural world falls into this category.

Man Vs Himself. I think among all the categories, this is probably the most creative one because it is so hard to come up or to build up a story where the character is opposing to himself. Just think of a man that suffers a lot from addiction or a man that is being bothered by a certain decision that he did or a man that is quite confused and can’t decide on something.

Man Vs Society. Think of the man who belongs to a minority and is being discriminated. A man who is being bullied in school. Think about racism. Those are the things where a character is opposing against the society.

Well, of course a story or especially a novel, can have all these categories in one too. Hope you find it informative too. Happy blogging guys.
